German Pride On Display In 50th Annual Steuben Day Parade
September 15, 2007
It was a celebration of German pride in Midtown Saturday as the 50th annual Steuben Day Parade marched along Fifth Avenue.
About 50 clubs from Germany, including music, dance, and carnival groups were on hand to celebrate the event's golden anniversary.
The parade's grand marshal was the former United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. The guest of honor was the former German Chancellor, Dr. Helmut Kohl.
The parade kicked off at noon at 63rd Street and made its way up Fifth Avenue to 86th Street.
A German-American Friendship Party was also held in Central Park
Steuben Day is held traditionally on a weekend in mid-September (von Steuben was born September 17th), celebrating Baron Friedrich von Steuben, who arrived in the United States as a volunteer offering his services to General George Washington, and is generally considered the German-American event of the year. Participants march, dance, and play music.
